Mecha Zone: Jaguar by Mecha-Zone Mecha Zone: Jaguar by Mecha-Zone
I made this mech specifically for my 2004 mecha sketch book. I don't think I have ever posted it online before!

The linework on this is pretty sloppy compared to what I do now but I thought I did a pretty good job back when I drew it. I also have some issues with the leg design but overall I like this mech.

I made a chicken legged style counterpart to this but I don't think I ever colored it and no one I showed the drawing to ever liked it :(

Sorry, but I started drawing robots when I was about 5 and don't have them anymore. Take my word when I tell you that they were terrible. I didn't start getting OK at robots until I was in high school. I didn't start getting GOOD at drawing mechs until after I was out of art college... when I was about 25.

I think the knees would definitely kill this one. Being top-heavy with a high CG, the knees would be the breaking point, regardless of how the joint is designed.

Does this model come standard with airbags? =D

Pretty Awsome,I like the arm joints, looks like they give a good motion range. Also the colour scheme is pretty neat. Only problem I have, is as you said, the knees, but then It might some kind of joint guard/motor, its interesting, but different.

Very nice design. His head reminds me a little of Appleseed, you know? ;)

But is looks great. Maybe its upper legs are a little bit to thick under the knees.

Btw. great job on the colors ^^

Folks will have to realise that the entire franchise of mecha includes that of robotech, etc. Every mech has it's own appeal and it's followers.

If (for a die hard fan of battletech ever since mech commander) I can sit and watch stuff like Appleseed and find sme good in it, so should they.

greenzaku my friend, I have to be honest with you and tell you that this is actually more like my normal style than all this mechwarrior stuff. i have always been more of an anime fan at heart and I used to draw like this all the time. It wasn't until I worked on mechwarrior 4 that I really started drawing more boxy western style mechs

Well, either is fine by me. Some of the latest Battletech designs, and the earliest Robotech ones, were very anime-ish, but I hold nothing against any style...I mean, even real world cars show hints of different countries in their design. :)

The elbow pivot points are off by quite a bit. I can see why you did not want to publish this, David. At first glance, it is appealing, but careful examination causes it to break down.

You are quite right - your techniques have improved heaps. Still, pretty to look at...

Hey Steve. Actually, I drew those elbows like that on purpose and like them quite a bit. That sort of joint allows almost 180 degrees of motion assuming the cables retract up into the bicep housing as the arm pivots forward.

Sorry, Dave.

I was looking at a humaniform machine and expected it to work through the usual human movement arcs - and show joints which accommodated same. The knees should have tipped me off.

I retract what I said - but if it was intentional, because it has a human shape, it still appears a bit odd to the untrained eye.

Hey, no problem. I know the joints look weird, but sometimes you have to push the envelope just to see what happens.
