Combat mecha by Mecha-Zone Combat mecha by Mecha-Zone
Here's another mecha I designed for the Quarto book "50 Robots to draw and Paint".

This one is REALLY generic but I still had a lot of fun drawing it. I think the coloring style is working pretty well too with the rusty accents.

Again, this is an old drawing so no critiques please... I know there is plenty wrong with it.

Thank you. I was only responsible for some of the designs. Eachof several artists did the write-up for their robots and then the books author put it all together and wrote the introduction. The author also contributed art since he is a very good artist.

Oh man, YOU did that book?!! You inspired me to try drawing my own, you were such a huge influence! Unfortunately I could never get it right, even after so much practice.
Still, you are amazing, and I am honored to have finally met you. Sort of. XD

I hope you didn't give up practicing. I don't think I was any good at drawing until I was in my 30's :(

Thank you very much. It's always a joy to hear that someone liked my work form that book. I remember having a lot of fun with that project. It was great because they let me do whatever I wanted with practically no art direction.

Sure, practice a lot and start simple. Learn to draw basic things really well and then build up from there. Mechas are very hard and complex. Can you draw a car? Imagine that a mech is like a car with arms and legs. If you can't draw a basic car, then how can you expect to draw a whole mech? Tr drawing cars, trucks and other vehicles as practice.

Big fan of your work ! I bought this book a while ago during my studies and I enjoyed every last illustration you did. I made a version of this guy in 3D. It's still a work in progress and proportions are a bit different but in the end it's the same thing :) you can check it out if you like [link]

Again Love your work !

This looks like some uber machine on the battlefield, which would be able to zoom around, picking up and crushing tanks, firing its heavy weapon on the enemies.
What's worse, they could be many of them.
Perfect mass production war machine.

:D Awesome, I have that book, it's not a bad read and it was pretty good for the more giving ideas on unusual robot designs. There are some wierd ones (like the burning Wikker man mech :bleh: ) I had never considered before then.

Ah, I see now, very cool. Now that I know who you are I have to say that out of the three designs in the book, The "Prototype Hover Robot" on page.46 is my favorite. It's potrays a very alien feel which I enjoy seeing in various machine designs.

I like it a lot! The rusting and camo look very good. IMO parts of the body, particularly the mid-section and shoulder have a very Front Mission 'Wanzer' look, which I love.

Will need to study this closely when I finally get to rendering these: [link] this is very much like the vibe I'm after for that project.

Did you use any overlays for the metal texturing, or is it all done w/ subtle brush work?

that's all subtle brush work. And your Big Joe, "cough", will look really cool painted like that!

 Thanks, Dave! Like I said, this one has been bookmarked for microscopic color study.

BTW, there's not much connecting the 'feet' to the leg is there? What with the treads running in between them and all. Is all the weight on the bit of armor on the foot side there? Please don't take that as crit, I think the design works just fine. ^^; Only curious.

How is that A-10mech coming along?

yeah, that's what Keydan was just commenting about. I totally didn't care at the time because I was in such a hurry. I would never do anything like that nowadays. I can't believe no one at Quarto caught that or made me fix it.

Haven't started the a-10 mech yet but it definitely won the poll so I'll be doing it sooner or later. Hopefully sooner. I have a bunch of little stuff to do. I finished coloring a cover this morning and now I am working on coloring the Asmodeus mech for the "mecha fail" contest I held a couple of months ago.

Ooops, didn't see that bellow. Sorry for the redundancy! That it wasn't an issue is interesting in itself tho: lends strength to the theory that a pleasing enough design can overcome certain little technical discrepancies. I mean, I think it could be amended w/ minimal intrusiveness to the design, but in this case really NBD.

:fingerscrossed: our breath remains bated on the thunderbolt, then... :D

I remember the contest and the winner. That oughta be fun too.
