3D Printed mech assembled by Mecha-Zone 3D Printed mech assembled by Mecha-Zone
Here is my first self-made 3D printed mecha all assembled. Made from 33 parts and it is approx 6.5" tall. Not articulated... maybe for the next one? I used my new Afinia H-series printer. It's an entry level printer so the resolution isn't great, but isn't bad (.15mm).

Here's my concept art for the piece
and the 3D model I made with Blender

Incredible! did you do some post-work on the surface or is it as it came out of the printer?

Hi. Yes, I smooth the parts with acetone. It's not perfect, but definitely helps.

So how much do you think it costs per print for something this size?

In raw material? maybe $5. It's the time for printing, about 18 hours, and the time for clean-up, a few hours, that add up. Not to mention the days of modeling.

This one isn't for sale. Maybe I'll make a couple for sale later. Don't have enough free time right now to even think about it.

What format do these printers use? Is it Nurbs or something more universal?

you have to export the model into .stl format. You can start with a nurbs model or a polygon model... either is fine. I like to model with polygons so that's what I use.

What made you choose the Afinia over say a makerbot?

I have a couple of friends who have Afinias. Also, I've heard some conflicting things about makerbot and the people who run that company so I didn't want to give them my money

This coukd revolutionize Gunpla/Model kits in general. At the very least Resin Version up kit add-ons might be a thing of the past like B-club. They could post the 3D Model instead of producing molds or use it to make the molds, or of course those who have the machine could make their own custom parts. Sky's the limit...

yeah, it opens up a whole new level of rights management and piracy concerns as people become able to print from 3D models they download. I for one would like to be rewarded for the many, many hours it takes to develop a design and make the model.

No doubt.  That day will come sooner for me than most.  I've been looking at them for some time.  I have a small CNC mill, have had it for years, but a printer seams much faster and easier.  I just need to decide which model to get, I'm looking at the Form 1 from Form Labs, it's a HD Laser hardener, and pretty cheap (as far as HD printers go), but the company is new and they've had way more orders than they anticipated, so it might take a while before I can get one.

There are some powerful options if you cna bump up your budget. I spent $1600 on mine, but fro $3500 I could have gotten something with a laser and much better end results. I think this was the right choice for a novice like me who wants to use it more for fun and less for commercial applications.

and this is why I am not allowed a 3D printer. I am running out of shelf space already, if I could make more stuff at home at little cost but time? Gah don't even want to think about the clutter. Of course it would be a while before I am running of stuff as awesome as this, but still.

Ha, that's a concern that my wife shares. It takes a lot of effort to make the 3D models so that sort of defines the pace at which you can make new stuff. Of course you can still make 50 of the same thing if you really like it!
