2 New Battletech Mechs by Mecha-Zone 2 New Battletech Mechs by Mecha-Zone
2 mech re-designs I did last week for a client. Special thanks to Eriance [link] for posting his mechs for the same client since that is how I found the work!

These are for the Battletech 3063 TRO.

Stealth Spector and Black Knight

I'm working on more...

Definitely like this design of the Black Knight a lot more than your last or the original, and yes it has everything to do with the hands, if a mech has hands on the Table Top it should have hands everywhere.

The original is a joke. I don't care so much about the hands. With, without, doesn't matter to me. I actually like this design a bit better as well because I wasn't constrained by any particular design aesthetic like I was with MW4.

I like the looks of the Black Knight; much more imposing than the original in the TRs.

thanks. I really dislike the original Black Knight. It's just silly.

Are the Black Knight's weapons mounted on the shoulders?? ehhhh :/
Also, this one seems a bit too much like a man in a suit of armor, kinda like the original design..

The black knight here is an interesting compromise between the lackluster original and your healthy redesign from MW4. It's humanoid enough to resemble the original but adds to the design what was lacking from the original.

That helmet is awesome too.

Are minis for these going to come out someday?

With as much work has been going into this project, maybe CGL will decide to canonize it like they did with MekTek's Deimos mech.

Nice. Not sure about the somewhat cumbersome location of the guns on the Black Knight but love the helmet.

Yeah, the guns are a bit odd but I think it makes the design stand out as unique and that is pretty hard to do in the BT universe where every shape and form, even the ludicrous, has already been explored.

True. I like it in general only seems a bit odd since the rest of it is seemingly compact.

I think I would have put the BK's weapons under-arm style but it still looks good and I really like the head. Actually the whole thing is an improvement.

You have to be careful about what you change when you re-design a mech. There are A LOT of different BT mechs and each one has something specific that makes it unique. The bicep mounted gun is one of those things for the Black Knight. I think I sort of lost sight for that with the MW4 version.

You know I forgot about that, to me the Black Knight's big feature was it's knight helmet shaped head, which was also lost in MW4. The Wizkids version based on that one changed it further. Maybe I should take a shot at a re-design sometime.

I like this Black Knight a bit better than your MW4 version. I wonder, were the MW4 designs due to poly count limits or was it more artistic freedom?

Hi. I'm glad you like the new version. It isn't official unfortunately. The MW4 BK was the result of heavy art direction. The team was trying to make all the mechs look more militaristic and realistic where possible. Poly counts did play a small role, but we had about 1000 triangles for the highest level of detail so we could still get fairly ornate with the designs.

One of the greatest obstacles for me was trying to fit all the new mechs onto existing skeletons so we could re-use the animations. The constrained proportions forced the new mechs into certain body shapes.

Wow, thanks! I wondered about things like that. I understand that a number of canon designs are rather ungainly and don't look like they'd be able to move, much less serve an effective combat role. I can understand why there's so many variations on a theme from all the artists that have tackled BT designs. I initially thought that the deviation from official TRO art to MW4 had more to do with graphical limitations rather than IK skeletons. That's some interesting trivia.

I agree with many. The original BK was kinda...off. I even had to take a knock at its redesign.

just checked out your BK model. Looks like you stayed pretty true to the original in a lot of ways but improved he functionality of the joints. I like the shoulder shield too.

Hey, thanks for checking out my designs. I see you like to sketch mechs too! Classic Battletech has a lot of diversity- some awesome stuff and some utterly terrible crap. I've never seen a more devoted fan base than the CBT crowd and they will defend even the bad stuff as if it was manna from heaven.

I agree; there are a lot of stand-outs (the original Japanese ones are some of my fav's: [link]) and there are a lot of pretty terrible ones in the spec books (Macross' VF-1S clones?). Just hope that the good stuff will not go unnoticed...

It's been a long road for teaching myself mecha design, mainly because I'm coming from a 2D drafting-style background. Learning proper perspective and foreshortening has been difficult, but I try to have fun with it anyway!
